I have played the piano for more than 40 years, and over that time, I have come to realize that it provides the best form of stress reduction in existence. It is the only activity that completely transports my mind away from the world and into a new one. While reading a book, watching a movie, or attending a concert provides entertainment, these activities often only provide a temporary distraction. In contrast, playing the piano requires deep concentration, keeping my brain focused and engaged for much longer periods.
Playing the piano also has proven health benefits. During my undergraduate and graduate psychology studies, I learned that chronic stress – any stress lasting more than a day – inhibits the activity of telomerase in the body. Telomerase is the enzyme responsible for repairing the ends of all of your chromosomes in every cell in your body – without it you are at much greater risk of ageing, cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and lower white blood cell count (a compromised immune system) along with other serious conditions. So by playing piano and reducing your stress levels you force your brain to release Telomerase, thereby physically repairing your body.
Finally, the piano is the most effective tool I have for teaching my daughters music. Both girls are naturally drawn to the instrument. Since 2013, I have been taking them to music classes where we learn music to recreate together at home. As a parent, music is more than just a hobby; it is a powerful way to connect with my children and a remarkably effective tool for regulating mood—whether we are at home, in the car, or out for a walk.
